Security plan The US Department of Homeland Security said the move meant the UK would be on a similar level of alert to America. In a statement it said: "The UK is raising their measures to effectively where we are with the airport security measures that we have taken and announced over the last few weeks. "We have enhanced our security measures and communicated specific information to industry, law enforcement and the American people." Mike Granatt, a former head of the Civil Contingencies Secretariat in the Cabinet Office, said the move would have an effect both on the public and behind the scenes. "The main reason for alert states is to warn people who have a specific task that they ought to do something differently, they ought to be taking more steps or they ought to move to a different phase of the security plan," he said. "It also raises awareness among the public to keep their eyes open, and one shouldn't forget that the millions of pairs of eyes of the public are an extremely useful weapon in the fight against terrorism." The Hercules transport plane which was carrying troops and their families was flying from the capital Jakarta to the town of Madium when it crashed. Lucy Williams reports: Eyewitness reports describe a big explosion before the plane reached the runway. An army spokesman said the plane smashed into local houses before skidding to a halt in a nearby field and bursting into flames. The aircraft was almost completely destroyed in the crash – the wreckage is strewn across East Java’s bright green rice fields; its tail the only piece left intact. Rescue teams have been pulling out the dead and injured from the smoking debris. The plane was carrying military personnel and their families – including 10 children. It’s not clear yet why the plane crashed. The army says weather and landing conditions were good, and that the plane itself was in good condition. But the airforce has long complained that it is underfunded and that it lacks spare parts due to long-running US military sanctions which have recently been lifted. Образец фрагмента из художественного текста на пересказ: The Roar of the Coat Check, The Smell of the Crowd: A Confused American's First Venture into Russian Theatre by Emily Otto I spent my first day in Russia engaging in exactly two activities: lying comatose in my bed and staggering confusedly through a haze of jetlagged stupor. When I was informed that I would spend my second evening in Moscow attending a preview of the Moscow Art Theatre production of Maxim Gorky's The Philistines, I breathed a sigh of relief. Ah, yes. The theatre. This is why I'm here. I know how to do this part of Russia. Oh, how naive I was. In one short evening, I discovered that somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, I had ceased to be a reasonably educated and moderately jaded theatre artist, and commenced my new existence as a flaming idiot. My first night in a Russian theatre audience bore a vague resemblance to a world that I know, but I was definitely, definitely not in Kansas anymore. There was a crowd outside the theatre when we arrived. Just before we entered the building, a man bounded up to me and asked me a question — not that I had the remotest idea what the question was, but apparently my blank stare was a sufficient answer. My ever-patient Russian companion informed me that the man was looking for a ticket. I was surprised. Wasn't this a preview? In America, performances that precede the official opening are frequently quiet affairs. Interesting, I thought. People must be excited to see this show. I had no idea. The scene that greeted us in the lobby of the theatre looked less like a preamble to a play performance than to a sold-out rock concert in the States: crowds, chatter, excitement, chaos — and countless people under the age of sixty! At a theatre! I dove into the crowd and clumsily joined the flow of traffic headed toward the coat check. In the American theatre, there is an inexplicable dearth of coat checks. We simply stuff our bulky winter coats in the seats right along with our oversized bodies. I had been forewarned about the Russian procedure, and was happily preparing to shed a layer. I stepped up to the counter, coat in hand, ready for the exchange. My careful preparation, however, was apparently insufficient for the coat woman. Clearly, I was supposed to know the answer to the question she then asked me; after offering a repeat performance of my blank stare, I managed a weak “Uh... da?” She sighed, shook her head wearily, grabbed my coat, and handed me a tag. Success! After being shoved through the door of the theatre with impressive force by a woman twice my age and half my size, I wound my way through the labyrinth of ticketholders and miraculously found my row. I gazed longingly at my seat, shining like a beacon of light in the distance — and blocked by three tiny, gray-haired, and strangely terrifying women. In unison, they looked up at me expectantly. In that moment, I came to the horrible realization that not only did I not remember how to say “Pardon me” in Russian, but that I remembered how to say nothing in Russian except for “cold”, “dog”, and “apartment”, exactly none of which would get me anywhere in this situation. I bit my lip, smiled my most apologetic smile, threw in a bit of blank stare for good measure, and flung myself toward my destination.
