An Educated American Woman
(An Excerpt)
This was in December. Late one afternoon, George left his office in Brooklyn and went to Manhattan to do some shopping. All the high buildings in midtown were hidden in rain clouds, but he felt their presence overhead like the presence of a familiar mountain range. His feet were wet, and his throat felt sore. The streets were crowded, and the buildings were decorated. He could see the canopy of bright lights at Lord and Taylor’s and Saks. Blasts of holy music wavered through the rain. He stepped into a puddle. It was as dark as night; seemed, because of many lights, the darkest of the nights.

He went into Saks. Inside, the scene of well-dressed and brightly lighted pillage stopped him. He stood to one side to avoid being savaged by the crowds that were pushing their way in and out. A woman standing beside him dropped some parcels. He picked them up. She had a pleasant face, wore a black mink coat, and her feet, he noticed, were wetter than his. She thanked him and he asked if she was going to storm the counters. “I thought I would,” she said, “but now I think I won’t. My feet are wet, and I have a terrible feeling that I’m coming down with a cold”.

“I feel the same way,” he said. “I have been planning to buy some Christmas presents, but now when I think, that I’ll have to squeeze through this crowd to the counter, gain the shop-girl’s attention, choose the presents and wait at the cashier’s for my turn, I think, I won’t stand it. Let’s find a quiet place and have a drink.”

“Oh, but I can’t do that,” she said.

“Why not? He asked. “It’s a festival, isn’t it?”

“I had never thought of it that way,” she said.

“Come on.” He took her arm and led her out of the shop down the avenue to a cosy little bar where they had three or four drinks and then took a cab down-town to see her studio.

They met after this two or three times a week. He never discovered much about her beyond the fact that she lived on Park Avenue and was often alone. She was interested in his clothes and kept him posted on department-store sales. It was a large part of their conversation. Sitting on the sofa next to him, she told him that there was a sale of neckties at Saks, a sale of shoes at Brooks, a sale of shirts at Altman’s.

She made him go to the sales and helped him choose a pair of fashionable loafers and a genuine leather belt to match. Then she talked him into buying a new wallet. He had never been very particular about his appearance before. But now he liked it.
Shopping
Learn the dialogue and reproduce it in pairs.
Salesman: Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?

Robert: Good morning. I just wanted a pair of socks.

S.: Certainly, sir. I think I may say we have a very fine selection. These cotton ones, for instance. They are Italian; only came in this morning.

R.: Well, I didn’t want anything fancy. Just ordinary woolen socks, you know. I’m going on a short walking tour, so I thought something warm…

S.: Walking tour, sir? Then if you don’t mind my saying so, you’ll certainly need some of these quick drying wool-and-cotton socks. They wash beautifully and dry in no time at all. How many shall I wrap up for you?

R.: Just one pair will do. Those brown ones.

S.: If you are going on holiday, sir, perhaps you’ll be interested in this new line of trousers. Very popular they are. You’ll find them invaluable when you are out in bad weather.

R.: Are they crease-resistant?

S.: They are crease-resistant, water-proof and fade-proof. You should have a pair if you are going on holiday, sir.

R.: Well, perhaps…

S.: The blue ones? Very well, sir. Oh, sir, I see you are looking at that yellow cashmere pullover. The last one that is, and it happens to be just your size. You’ll need something to keep you warm on a walking tour. You’ll feel a different man when you put it on.

R.: It certainly looks nice and warm. But won’t it get dirty rather quickly?

S.: Well, of course, sir, all light colours show the dirt. But you’ll find this washes like a dream. Just use a spoonful of our special washing powder. I’ll wrap up a couple of packets with the pullover.

R.: But won’t it shrink?

S.: Shrink, sir? We’ve sold dozens of these pullovers and haven’t had a single complaint. If it shrinks, sir, we’ll give your money back.

R.: All right. I’ll take it. You can wrap up everything in one parcel.

S.: Let me see: socks, trousers, pullover. Here is your parcel, sir.
