Deviant TraitsA person does not need to act in a deviant manner in order to be considered deviant. Sometimes people are considered deviant because of a trait or a characteristic they possess. Sociologist Erving Goffman used the term stigma to identify deviant characteristics. These include violations of the norms of physical ability or appearance. For example, people who are confined to wheelchairs or who have IQs over 140 are deviant because they do not represent the usual behaviors or characteristics of most people. Прочитайте и переведите текст «The Universally Recognized Facial Expressions of Emotion» Charles Darwin wrote in 1872 his book, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals that “facial expressions of emotion are universal, not learned differently in each culture”. There have been arguments both in favor and against ever since. Several studies since then have attempted to classify human emotions, and demonstrate how your face can give away your emotional state. The Key Research in Favor of Universally Recognized Facial Expressions of Emotion The main research into the topic came from psychologist Paul Ekman, who pioneered research into emotion recognition in the 1960s. His team of scientists provided their test subjects with photos of faces showing different emotional states. The test subjects had to classify the emotional states they saw in each photo, from a list of possible emotions. Other research studies over the years have used similar methods. Ekman’s first research determined that there were six main emotions, which he called universal emotions. These original (исходные) universal emotions are: 1. Joy (Happiness); 2. Surprise; 3. Sadness; 4. Anger; 5. Disgust; 6. Fear. There is a seventh emotion that is sometimes considered universal: 7. Contempt. There is some dispute as to whether this is considered a universally recognized emotion. It is really a measure of anger and disgust, and was an additional emotion Paul Ekman added in the 1990s. What about other obvious emotions we feel, such as guilt, shame, jealousy and pride? While we genuinely (искренне, неподдельно) feel these as emotions, we do not tend to show clear and obvious expressions. That is probably why so many people are able to hide these emotions from those around them - the emotions often do not show on their faces at all. Robert Plutchik who was an adjunct professor (внештатный преподаватель) at the University of South Florida, basically agreed with Ekman's classification but developed his own model, called the "wheel of emotions". This suggested that there are eight primary emotions, grouped on a positive or negative basis: joy versus sadness; anger versus fear; trust versus distrust; and surprise versus anticipation. These basic emotions can in turn be modified to form complex emotions. Later Research and Microexpressions Over time (в течение долгого времени), Ekman expanded his model and added additional emotions during the 1990s. The other new emotions he recognized are: amusement, contentment, embarrassment, excitement, guilt, pride in achievement, relief, satisfaction, sensory pleasure, and shame. Some of these can be seen in microexpressions. Microexpressions are very quick facial expressions involuntarily made by people in particular circumstances. It is almost impossible to hide microexpressions. Good poker players, for instance, closely examine their opponents' faces looking for microexpressions which may give away the nature of the cards they have in their hands. Microexpressions often occur in a fraction of a second. They can, of course, be captured by high speed cameras and used for analysis.

I suggest that we all go to the concert. It is necessary that all people care of their health. If only he were free! It’s about time you solved your problems! I wish I had finished my picture long ago. If we had been at the hospital, we should have helped you with your medical insurance. Why should I go there? The teacher advised that the girl should be sent to a musical school. It’s a pity you should have fallen ill. If we had had to choose we should have come to another country. Do the test 1. In 2009, Dr. Ekman was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine, and in 2014 ranked fifteenth among the most influential psychologists of the 21st century. Ekman has authored more than 14 books, 170 published articles and holds several honorary doctoral degrees. BIOGRAPHY Dr. Paul Ekman received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Adelphi University (1958) after a one-year internship at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute, University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He served two years as First Lieutenant and chief psychologist at Fort Dix, New Jersey, then returned to Langley Porter (UCSF) where he became professor of psychology in the UCSF medical school in 1972, retiring in 2004. Dr. Ekman’s research started in the late 1950’s, focusing on hand movements and gesture. It wasn’t until 1965 that he became interested in facial expression and emotion after receiving a grant from the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the Department of Defense to examine cross-cultural studies of nonverbal behavior. In 1967 and 1968, Dr. Ekman traveled to Papua New Guinea (photograph at right) to further study nonverbal behavior of the Fore people, an isolated, Stone Age culture located in the South East Highlands. His research provided the strongest evidence to date that Darwin, not Margaret Mead, was correct in claiming facial expressions are universal. Dr. Ekman then developed, with W. Friesen, the first and only comprehensive tool for objectively measuring facial movement – the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), published in 1978, and revised in 2003 with J. Hager as third author. FACS remains the gold standard for identifying any movement the face can make, free of interpretive inferences. Ekman then teamed with Terry Sejnowski to show that neural networks could be used to have computer based facial measurements. In 1967, Dr. Ekman began to study deception, starting with clinical cases in which the patients falsely claimed not to be depressed in order to commit suicide when not under supervision. In the very first case, when films were examined in slow motion, Ekman and Friesen saw micro facial expressions which revealed strong negative feelings the patient was trying to hide. When he retired from the University of California in 2004, after more than thirty years as a full professor, Dr. Ekman decided to translate his research findings into resources that could be of help to the general public. He formed the Paul Ekman Group, PEG LLC, and authored his book Emotions Revealed: Understanding Faces and Feelings to Improve Emotional Life. An earlier publication, Telling Lies, had prompted national and regional law enforcement groups to ask for help. Now it came, in the form of workshops and interactive training tools. The FOX TV program ‘Lie to Me’, based on Ekman’s research and expertise, brought international publicity to micro expressions and Ekman’s work. He conducted workshops with major security agencies worldwide. CURRENT WORK For the last decade Ekman has worked to translate his research into practical applications; Some of Ekman’s current work emerges from his close relationship with the Dalai Lama. Reflecting more than fifty hours spent in one-on-one conversation with the Dalai Lama, an ebook, Moving Towards Global Compassion, is now available. In addition, Dr. Ekman, with his daughter Dr. Eve Ekman, created the Atlas of Emotions with the support of the Dalai Lama.
