Loch Ness Monster
In the north of Scotland there is a very famous lake—Loch Ness. The water of the lake is dark and always very cold. And Loch Ness is full of fish.

Everybody heard about the Loch Ness monster. It appears in the news from time to time. There are many stories about the water monster «Nessie».

Is the monster a fact or fiction?

There are many theories about the Loch Ness monster. Some scientists say, for example, that these animals lived in the North Sea, but came to the lake to give birth their young in it. Some of them continued to live there after volcanic action.

People who say that they ha seen the monster describe it as an animal with a small head, a long neck and a large body. Expeditions of scientists took many underwater photos in Lock Ness, but they did not see a large animal. Year after year thousands of tourists come to Loch Ness and put their tents near the lake. They hope to see this wonderful animal. A lot is written and said about the monster, and for some people «Nessie» is good business. Thousands of visitors buy shirts with «Nessie» on them, books about the monster and all kinds of souvenirs every year. The Loch Ness monster is a real attraction for people from all parts of Britain and from many other countries. The museum of the Loch Ness monster was opened in Scotland some years ago.

Eisteddfods
I have just returned from the United Kingdom. It was a very interesting trip, and I’d like to tell you about Eisteddfod (айстедвод - состязание валлийских певцов, музыкантов и поэтов).

It is a meeting of Welshmen (валлийцы - коренные жители Уэльса) interested in Welsh (валлийский) poetry, songs and music. Every year, in August, there is a National Eisteddfod in Wales (Уэльс - часть Великобритании). About a hundred years ago, some Welsh people decided to use some traditions and ceremonies at the Eisteddfods. Welsh traditions are very old, and the Welsh people are very proud of them.

Last year the Eisteddfod was in a town in North Wales; this year the Welshmen have met in a town in South Wales. 15,000 people have come to the Eisteddfod this time. Some wanted to listen to the poems; some wanted to listen to the singing; and some just wanted to meet their friends and talk in Welsh. I have not heard much English at the Eisteddfod! I have visited some competitions at the Eisteddfod, too: for the best Welsh poem and song of the year, and the best singers. The competitions are organized by the Druids (друид, в данном тексте - распорядитель на айстедводе); their leader is always a poet.

These spikes are symbols of the seven seas and seven continents. In her left arm she holds a tablet with the date of the Declaration of Independence (Декларация Независимости).
