At the Hotel
As soon as you are through with the customs, you’ll probably take a taxi to a hotel. It’s best to book a room in advance. In this case you’ll be sure (наверняка) to stay at a hotel without any problem. You can book a room by telephone or telegram.
In many hotels, a porter takes your luggage and shows you the way to the receptionist’s desk. The receptionist will ask you what room you want (a single room, a double room, a suite, etc.) and for how many days (nights) you are going to stay at the hotel. He may offer you a room with modern conveniences (bath, telephone, television). Then he will ask you to sign in. In Great Britain, you often have to write your name in a hotel register. In the USA, you have to put down your name, nationality and address in a special registration form.
When the formality is over, the receptionist gives you your key and the porter shows you up to your room. Now you are referred to as a guest. When going out you are supposed to leave the key at the desk. In modern hotels, the guest is given a card with a magnetic code to open the room.
The room charge usually includes your breakfast. Sometimes it includes the service, or the service is paid additionally as a tip.
The guests must warn the receptionist in advance about the day and hour of signing out, and he will have the bill ready for them in time.

The taxi with Oleg Rodimov had hardly stopped at the entrance of the Embassy Hotel when the doorman opened the door and helped them out. While he was paying the taxi-driver a bell-boy came up, took the luggage, and then he led him through the lobby straight up to the receptionist.

The bell-boy leads Oleg Rodimov down the corridor and stops at room 215. He opens the door, places both suitcases on a special rack and shows Oleg into his room.
