| Текст для чтения LOGIX, Ltd 1. Mark Smith is working for a computer company during his university holidays. The company is called Logix. It has 25 employees, and its turnover is four million pounds a year. It started as a software company, and the main part of its business is helping companies to run their software systems. Recently, the directors of Logix decided to add manufacture of hardware to their activities. For the moment, they manufacture two basic computers: a desktop model and a notebook computer. They can now offer the companies a complete service: they sell the necessary software and hardware, install it and maintain it. Mark would like to join the company as a programmer after finishing the university, but for now he is working as an office boy. It is a chance for him to get to know the company, and a chance for them to get to know him.
2. The office is very well equipped. Each office worker has a desk with drawers, a chair, a desk lamp, a computer (a keyboard and a monitor), a telephone and a wastepaper basket. On the walls, there are bookshelves and modern paintings. At the wall, there is a filing cabinet. There are also two printers and a modem. In the corner, there is a photocopier, a scanner and a shredder. All the stationery items are in the office supplies room. The stationery includes paper, folders, staplers, staples, paper clips, hole punches, notepads, pens, pencils, envelopes, labels, floppy disks, etc. Here and there are green plants, they make the room look more comfortable and nice. When the workers run out of stationery, the office boy gets it for them from the office supplies room.
3. Staff members have certain duties:
The office manager distributes work, oversees office operations and has responsibility for the supplies and equipment.
The bookkeeper enters financial data and balances all financial records on computer spreadsheets.
The lawyer drafts legal documents and counsels during the negotiations.
The engineers and technicians install and maintain the hardware and software.
The secretary answers phone calls, makes appointments and e-mails business letters.
The office boy is at hand to help the staff in their job. He gets the stationery, waters the plants, assists the technicians, etc.
All the clerks have to write reports.
4. There are a few rules and traditions in the office. Smoking, drinking alcohol and personal telephone talks are forbidden. Staff members do not wear jeans, T-shirts and bright make-up at work – business suit contributes more to the image of the company. Office workers call each other by their first names. It is a taboo to raise voice, gossip and come late to work. The office hours are from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. with a lunch break. The employees prefer having lunch in the nearby café. In the same café they celebrate corporate events and national holidays.

Тексты для чтения № 1 Telephone. Telephone systems. Read and translate the text: The telephone is a necessary means of communication in everyday life and in business.
If you want to call (=phone) your friend, you dial his phone number which can be found in the directory. If it is a long-distance call, you may have to ask the operator to connect you.
The telephone will ring, and if your friend is at home, he will answer it by picking up the receiver. If he is busy, he may ask you to call back later. If he doesn’t want to speak to you, he may hang up. If he is already on the phone when you call him, his number is engaged (=busy) and you can’t get through. A telephone in a public place is a phone box (booth) or pay phone. To place a local call, pick up the receiver. You will hear a constant tone. Deposit the coins into the slot. When you have deposited the correct amount of change, you will hear a short beeping signal. When the constant tone returns, dial the number you wish to reach. In many countries the telephone system has a special number for each region of the country. It is called an area code. If you know the area code and the phone number, you can dial the number and you’ll be automatically connected with any person in any part of the country. You can dial directly to many countries overseas or you can ask for the operator especially if you want to make a collect call. If somebody wants to know your telephone number, you should call out (называть) each figure separately: 8163 – eight-one-six-three. For zero you read “oh” (though “zero” is acceptable, too). If the first or last two figures are the same, you use the word “double”: for example: 2235 – double two-three-five, 4444 – double four-double four.
