Barry says, 'It's always difficult when there are changes in the workplace, but it's really important that you try to make the best of it and carry on with your job...' What do you say to that?

1. 'Well, maybe you're right... I'm just finding it a little difficult at the moment, that's all...'

2. 'I'm sorry Barry, but I really have made an effort and I'm just not happy in the team at the moment. But it's not just that - I've been in the same job for eight years and I think it's about time I had a change. I'd like to try doing something different...'

Barry says, 'Okay, well you obviously feel very strongly about this. I can't make any promises now, but I can talk to the other team leaders to see if there's any chance you could swap with one someone in their teams.' What do you say now?

1. 'Thanks Barry, I'd really appreciate that. Shall I put this request in writing?'

2. 'Cheers Baz. I won't forget this.'

You are Barry, the boss. Your employee’s name is Emily.

You have a member of staff, Emily, who has upset a number of colleagues over the last couple of weeks. After she made some rude comments at the team meeting last week, you have decided to discuss the matter with her. You need to be polite but very firm and clear.

How do you start the meeting?

1. 'Hi Emily. This won't take long - I'll come straight to the point. Recently, at work, there's been one or two occasions where you've been a little uncooperative, surly even. Do you know the times that I'm referring to?'

2. 'Okay Emily, well, um, I've been meaning to talk to you about something for a little while and unfortunately it's about something that you're not really going to like. And I'd much rather not have this conversation, but I really feel I have to...'

Emily responds by saying 'Are you talking about what happened at the meeting?' What do you say now?

1. 'Yes, that was one occasion. What you said at that meeting was very naughty, don't you think?'

2. 'That was one occasion, yes, but there are other things too. Now, I don't want to jump to any conclusions, so I thought I'd give you this opportunity to tell me if there are any issues I should be aware of with your work...'

Emily now says 'Well... I do feel like since we reorganised the teams, my role has changed. And... I don't really like working with Karen very much.' What do you say now?

1. 'I see, right. Well, she can be quite a tricky person to work with, as you say. What would you like me to do about it?'

2. 'Well, I'm afraid that that isn't really good enough, Emily. I know it's hard when there are changes in the team, but you're going to have to snap out of it. It's really important that even if you don't like people on a personal level you carry on being professional at work...'

You've explained what you are unhappy about, so all you need to do now is make clear what you expect from Emily in the future. What do you say?

1. 'In the next few weeks I would quite like to see some improvement, if that's not too much to ask.'

2. 'Well, next week it's the team trip and it's going to be really important for us to work together on that. So I really want to see you getting involved with that and basically getting on with your job. Okay?'
