Computer viruses
People have many problems with computers. Users don’t know what to do with them, whether it is possible to rename a file without using Word, and so on. All those problems are connected with ignorance. But even people who do know almost everything about computers sometimes face one serious problem – this problem is computer viruses.
Let’s recall the events which took place at the end of April 1999. On April 26, the 13th anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe, a same-named virus appeared, known to professionals as CIH macro virus. Hundreds of thousands of computers in Asia and the Middle East have had their data wiped out by this virus.
CIH was discovered in June 2000 in Taiwan, but despite warnings from anti-virus software companies about its deadly effects taking place since then, it still appears to have wreaked havoc in certain countries. In the West, companies have protected their computers with anti-virus programs that killed it, but in Asia and the Middle East the same precautions have been frequently ignored. The result is obvious. More than 100,000 computers have been affected across China. Government officials of South Korea apologized for not taking more urgent actions, and estimated the damage caused by the attack upon 250,000 PCs as two hundred fifty million US dollars. More than 30,000 computers in India have collapsed; major industries, banks and other financial institutions have been badly hit. Israeli data recovery experts say that there has been a catastrophe: thousands of computers affected, including those of major financial institutions, an intelligence organization, and a large Internet Service Provider.
