LONDON

London is a capital of Great Britain. It lies in the South East of England on both banks of river Thames. London is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest port and industrial town in England. London is more than twenty centuries old.

The heart of the capital is the City. The territory of the City is only about one square mile, it is the financial and business center of the country. It contains almost all important English banks and offices.

The West End of London is famous for its beautiful monuments and palaces, fine parks, fashionable shops and big hotels. The East End is a quite different from the West End. It is the district of factories, plants and docks. The main branches of industry are machine - building, ship - building, metal-processing and others. The narrow streets and poor houses of the East End present a contrast to the homes of the rich people in the West End.

There are many places of interest in London. One of them is Trafalgar Square with the Nelson's monument 185 feet high. Buckingham Palace is the royal residence. Westminster Abbey is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. It contains the memorials of many famous citizens of Britain.

Across the road from Westminster Abbey are the Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British government. The clock tower towers over the Houses of Parliament. It contains "Big Ben" on of the largest clock in the world.

The Tower of London is one of the most interesting places in London. It was a fortress, a royal residence, a prison, now it is a museum. Not far from the Tower you can see the Tower Bridge, one of the finest bridges in London.

London is famous for its green parks. Hyde Park is the most popular of them. It is the great park in London as well.

London is the centre of the country's cultural life. There are many picture galleries and museums there. The National Gallery houses a priceless collection of paintings. The famous British Museum is one of the best museums in the world. There are also many other historic buildings and museums in London.

WASHINGTON

Washington is the capital of the USA. It was founded in 1791 in the District of Columbia on the Potomac River. It was natural that the capital should receive the name of Washington - after the name of the commander-in-chief of the American Army in the War for Independent who became the first president of the Union. Washington together with the suburbs has near 3 million people. It is an administrative city without much industry.

Washington is well-planned because it was built as the capital. Its streets are straight and low. There are a lot of parks, gardens and beautiful buildings in Washington. The center of the city is the Capitol Building. Four avenues radiate from the Capitol divining the city into four parks.

The capitol is the highest building in Washington. There is a law in Washington not to built the houses higher than the Capitol. That is why there are no sky-scrapes in Washington. The Capitol is the name of both the Senate and the Houses of Representatives. The building contains some 430 rooms. On the top of the dome there is a bronze statue representing freedom and 36 columns surrounding the building represent the number of states in the USA when this structure was designed.

There are many interesting and beautiful monuments in Washington. The most well-known them are: Washington Monument-a tall marble obelisk, inside which there are 898 steps to the top and it symbolizes the nation's respect to George Washington. The Lincoln Memorial is a beautiful building of white marble. A huge statue of Lincoln» is inside the building. The memorial was built like Greek Temple with 36 columns. They represent the number of the states when Lincoln died. The other places of sightseeing are: the National Gallery of Art, the White House, Jefferson Memorial and others.

NEW YORK CITY

New York is a major regional, national and international city. It is largest city and port the United States. New York harbour is the largest and finest in the world. Every year a great number of big ships from all countries come up to the docks. New York has population of over 9 million people. It is interesting to know that the land was bought from the local Indian by Dutch for 24 dollars. The centre of New York is located on Manhattan Island. The Island lies between two rivers: the Hudson River and the East River.

The Statue of Liberty, standing in the harbour is the major symbol of New York. The Statue was built on funds collected in France by French sculptor Frederick Bartholdi. It symbolize firs of all, the friendship of the USA and France of those days. The Statue was officially presented to the USA in 1986. It also symbolizes the freedom that America got on the 4th on July in 1776.

Manhattan Island with the Wall-Street District is the head of American business and cultural. In New York City there are representatives of nearly all he world's national groups, so when you walk in the streets and avenues of Manhattan you can hear practically every language in the world.

There are a lot of cars in New York. You won't any trees or flowers on the streets but only cars. Most of the theaters are located on the side streets near Time Square. New York an industrial and cultural centre of the country.

ANCHORAGE

Anchorage is Alaska's largest city. It situates at the head of 345 km-long Cook Inlet, name for the British explorer who sailed its waterways on his final voyage in 1778. Anchorage's strategic location makes it convenient to reach by air, by land, by sea. It is just seven hours from Tokyo, eight hours from Paris and less than eight hours from New York City.

One of the tourists attraction in Anchorage is Lake Hood Air Harbour. From plane, helicopter or balloon the tourist can see most beautiful sights of Alaska. Many museum and concert halls provide cultural and entertainment options.

Anchorage Museum of History and Arts presents more than 30 new exhibitions and shows during the year, there is a wide collection of Alaskan and northern art.

CANBERRA

Canberra is the capital city of Australia. It stands about 580 meters above sea level. Canberra was designated from the outset as a planned city and has been developed on distinctive lines. The central area of the city is reserved for official buildings. The main commercial and stopping area is situated north of the lake at Civic Centre.

The Federal Government is the chief employer in Canberra. Various organizations representing political and other special groups have set up headquarters in the city. It is an important centre of diplomatic activity; nearly forty nations have established permanent diplomatic missions.

Points of interest are: the National library; the War Memorial, the 79-meter shaft of the Australian - American Memorial, expressing the gratitude of the Australian people for US assistance during World War II is a prominent landmark. Another popular attraction is the unique building of the Academy of Science with a 46 meters in diameter.

The district was first occupied a sheep run in 1826. In 1909 the area was chosen as the site for the national capital of Australia. Development of the city proceeded very slowly at first. But by the early 1960's Canberra became Australia's largest non-coastal city.

HISTORY OF BRITAIN

The Romans invaded Britain in 55 ВС (before Christ), led by Julius Caesar. He was angry because the Britons had been helping the Gauls to fight the Romans/ Caesar didn't get very far in the thick forest which covered southern; and the next year he and his army went back to Gaul.

The Romans did not come back until 43 AD (anno Domini), almost a century ago. This time their leader was the Emperor Claudius. Many people in the south of England welcomed them, but in the North and West they had to fight hard.

In 61 AD the army of Queen Boadicea attacked the Romans. But even her chariots, which had large knives sticking out of there wheels, could not beat the Romans soldiers. However, the invaders had great trouble in the north, on the border with Scotland. The Scottish tribes were so fierce that the Emperor Hadrian ordered the Roman army to build a huge wall along the border. You can still see Hadrian's wall today. It's 3 m thick, 5 m high and 115 km long.

The Roman armies left Britain in 410 because northern tribes were attacking Rome.they had given the country a system of roads which was to be important for many centuries. Christianity, which was now the Emperor's religion; and a language which has had a great influence on the way we speak today.

BOADICEA

When England still was divided into different into different kingdoms Queen Boadicea ruled one of them. We remember her in England now for her bravery and courage.

The war Boadicea fought was against the Romans. The Roman army was conquering the rest of the country during her reign, but she resisted. The Roman soldiers were much better equipped than Boadicea's men, and they were much better trained too. But she was a very determined leader, she led her soldiers into the battle herself, and when the military situation looked almost hopeless she rallied her men and encouraged them to go on fighting.

She had a lot of success at first. The Roman armies, which had been so successful almost everywhere else, were held by her army and even driven back. In the end, the Roman army was too strong for her rather wild and ragged band of men. They were surrounded, and had to give in, they had to surrender.

Queen Boadicea had to face the prospect of becoming a prisoner on the Romans. She decided that death would be better for her and her daughters then the dishounouf and bad treatment they would receive if they became prisoners. The history books relate that first she gave them poison and then took it herself, and when the Roman soldiers reached her she was dead.

MARY AND ELIZABETH TUDOR

The new king, Edward VI (1547-1553), Henry's son by Jine Seymour, died before she was sixteen. During his reign the first Book of Common Prayer in England was issued (1549) and the pace of the Reformation greatly increased. The king's health was however extremely weak and it was obvious that- Henry VIIFs daughter, Mary, would soon be the new queen.

Her popularity did not last long. In the first place she was married to King Philip of Spain, a move that was hated by the people, who feared that England would be absorbed in the Spanish dominions. Fortunately no child was born and the danger passed with Mary's death.

The main result of the marriage was therefor a disastrous alliance with Spain against France, which ended in loss of Calais (1558), England's last French possession.

The other cause of Mary's unpopularity, the reason for her nickname of "Bloody Mary" was her violent restoration of the Catholic religion. She died young and was succeeded by her Protestant sister Elizabeth I (1558-1603), under whose comparatively mild and tolerant rule the country was saved from being disunited by religious wars of the type that raged on the continent. It was the age when English literature flowered into greatness with such people as Marlowe, Spencer, the essayist

Bacon and , above all , William Shakespeare, the greatest dramatist in the English language.

THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

The Republic of Ireland - Eire in Irish - consists of four province; each province is divided into countries. Ireland is located in the Atlantic Ocean, to the west Great Britain. The national language is Irish, and English is recognized as a second official language. The central government in Dublin is powerful, but local authorities are partly responsible for education, health care, roads, housing, and so on.

Laws are made by the National Parliament, which consists of two houses, a House of Representatives and a Senate. Representatives are elected every five years; some Senators are elected as well, and some are appointed by the Prime Minister, (who elected by the House of Representatives). The President is mainly a ceremonial head of state, but has some political power; he or she is selected separately for a term of seven years. Real power is held by the Prime Minister, who chooses the members of the cabinet-but the House of Representatives must approve their appointment.

There are four main political parties; Fiana Fail, Fine Gael, the Progressive Democrats arid the Labour Party. Fiana Fail and Fine Gael are much bigger than the other Parties, but not usually big enough to have a majority in Parliament; so one of them must usually join with one of the other parties to form a government. Fiana fail and Fine Gael are both fairly right - wing; Fiana Fail is more religions and has more voters in the country while Fine Gail is not religions and has more voters in the cities.

THE USA

The United States of America is a federation of fifty states. Forty-eight of these states are in the same general area, between Canada in the North and Mexico in the South. The other two states are geographically separate. Alaska is in the extreme North-West of the American continent, and Hawaii is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The federal capital is Washington, D.C., south of New York near the East Coast.

Washington is the centre of Federal government, but each state has its own capital and own government. State government have large amount of power and independence: they make own laws, and they are also responsible for education, for the police force, for the prison system, for road-building and any other things.

Federal laws are made by Congress, which is the equivalent of the British Parliament. There're two "houses": the House of Representatives and the Senate. Each state sends representatives and senators to Congress. Elections to the House are held every two years, while Senators are elected for a six-year period.

The President is elected separately, together with the vice-president. They serve for a term of four years. The President chooses the people who will form the cabinet. These do not have to be elected members of Congress-they can be brought in from outside Congress-but the Senate must approve their appointment. Power is shared between the President and Congress, and if the President belongs to the minority party in Congress, it can cause problems.

There are two main political parties in the USA: the Democrats and the Republicans. The Democrats are slightly more to the left than the Republicans, but the differences between their are not usually very great.
