Christmas Day
Christmas Day is a public holiday. Families usually spend the day opening their presents which are often piled around the Christmas tree decorated with tinsel, baubles, fairy lights, etc. They eat and drink together. The most important meal is Christmas dinner. At the start of the meal, British people often pull a cracker, which contains a small toy, a paper bat, and a joke. The typical meal

nowadays consists of turkey with potatoes and other vegetables such as carrots and sprouts. In Britain this is followed by Christmas pudding — a sweet pudding containing a lot of dried fruit and often covered with burning brandy. Other traditional foods in Britain include Christmas cake — a cake containing a lot of dried fruit and usually having a covering of icing (hard sugar) made to be eaten at Christmas, and mince pies.

Americans bake special biscuits called Christmas cookies which they eat over the Christmas season (the time when people prepare for and celebrate Christmas, from mid-December to the end of the year).

In Britain, the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day and is also a public holiday. A lot of sports take place on Boxing Day and many people now spend time watching sport on television. In the US many stores hold special sales, where things can be bought cheaply, on the day after Christmas. Twelve days after Christmas is the time when people are supposed to take down their decorations and remove their Christmas trees.

Read the text. Announce the presentation of 2 Britain`s youngest disc jockeys. Explain the reason of their popularity.
Radio Days
Rowan Muir and Rowan Bates-Hamilton, both aged fifteen, live in Ullapool, a fishing port on the north-west coast of Scotland. The girls are Britain's youngest disc jockeys. They present their own radio show ’’Kids OK’’ every Saturday morning from eleven to twelve midday on the local radio station, Lochbroom FM.

Rowan Muir is the programme presenter and her school friend, 'Rowan Two', is her co-presenter. Lochbroom FM is now one of the top community radio stations in the UK.

People come from all over the world to see how the radio station works. 'At this very moment, a TV crew from Japan are making a film about the girls,' says station manager, Steve Boyle.

Do local teenagers like the programme? Rowan Muir says, 'All the girls at school like it. The boys were silly about it at first, but now they're asking us to play their favourite records, so it must be OK.' The two girls usually write all their scripts and choose the music. 'We always do a special five-minute feature on one particular artist or group. Today we're doing one on Queen. Next week we're going to do a programme on Oasis and Blur.'

There is one problem with Lochbroom FM: the FM signal is weak. 'Only about 5,000 people can hear our programme, and so I'm afraid you must travel to the top of north-west Scotland to hear us,' says Rowan Muir. 'But that's cool. Small is beautiful!'

I went to London to do some shopping. I bought everything and wanted to take the 3.30 train. Unfortunately, my taxi got stuck in a traffic jam, and by the time I got to Waterloo railway station, the train had already left. So I had to wait for an hour for the next train.

I bought an evening newspaper and wandered over to the station buffet. I bought a cup of coffee and a packet of chocolate biscuits. There were plenty of empty tables and I found one near the window, sat down and began doing the crossword.

After a couple of minutes a man sat opposite me. I didn't say anything and carried on with my crossword. Suddenly he reached across the table, opened my packet of biscuits, took one, dipped it into his coffee and ate it. I couldn't believe my eyes! I was too shocked to say anything. Anyway, I didn't want to make a fuss, so I decided to ignore it.

When the man took a second biscuit, I didn't look up and I didn't make a sound. I pretended to be very interested in the puzzle. After a few minutes, I put out my hand, took the last biscuit and glanced at the man. He was staring at me very angrily. I nervously put the biscuit in my mouth, and decided to leave. I was ready to get up and go when the man suddenly stood up and hurried out of the buffet. I felt very relieved and decided to wait two or three minutes before going myself. I finished my coffee and stood up. And there, on the table, where my newspaper had been was my packet of biscuits.

Mr. Parker Has a Problem
Gerald Parker, managing director of Reliant Insurance, is unhappy. This morning, three managers have come to his office, each telling him the same story. Somehow or other, the office employees have heard about the computer systems which will soon be introduced. The employees are all very upset. The older ones are afraid of modern technology, and the younger ones do not want to learn new methods of work. Most of the staff is certain that they will lose their jobs when the office is computerized. Some are already looking for jobs with other firms.

The staff is right in one way. The company will need fewer office workers when the computer is installed. This will be in three months' time, but the machine and systems will be working efficiently only six to nine months later. At that time, about half the staff- there are 15 altogether - will have to leave because there will be no work for them.

But what about now? This is the busiest time of the year for the company. Every employee is working overtime and will continue to do so for the next two months or more..The office has recently taken two temporary workers, but neither is doing her job well. Mr Parker is worried. He did not tell the office staff about the plans to install a computer because, for a long time, the management was not sure if they wanted to introduce it. He still has not signed the contract with the supplier of the equipment. Now he is beginning to think "Maybe we should forget about the computer and leave the office as it was".

Read the text. Write down the advice for your friend using modal verbs.
Buy, buy, buy …
Do you go shopping whenever you feel depressed? Do you spend too much money on things you don't really need, lose control and then go into debt? If you answered 'yes' to these questions, you may be a shopaholic!

'Shopaholism' is uncontrolled shopping in order to feel better about yourself. Just like some people go on holidays to sunny countries or eat chocolate to feel better, others simply go on shopping sprees. But shopaholics usually come home with bags and bags of items, most of which will never be used, and an empty bank account.
So, what can you do about the problem?
Always pay in cash.

Never take your credit cards with you when you go shopping - or better still, destroy them altogether.

Make a shopping list before you leave the house and stick to it.

Work out a monthly budget, so you know what you can spend.

Take only enough money with you to pay for the absolute essentials.

Avoid ordering goods from catalogues, and don't watch shopping channels on TV.

If you see something you feel you must have, ask the shop to keep it for you and go back again a few days later. If you still want it, buy it.

Just follow these simple steps and you should never lose control of your purse or your budget again!

Amish people
Imagine a world without telephones or television, without cars or electricity. In this world the women wear long dresses. There is no industry. Everyone works on farms and travels by horse or on loot. Where do you think this world is? Europe is the seventeenth century, perhaps? In fact, it is Pennsylvania in America in the 1990s. It is the world of the Amish people.

The Amish people went to America in the eighteenth century and since then their lifestyle has not changed at all. They don't even speak English among themselves. They speak German as their ancestors did. The Amish are farmers and they base their life on the Bible. There were no tractors or telephones in the Bible and there are no tractors or telephones in the Amish villages today.

Amish life is very strict and very simple. Their clothes are very plain. The men and boys wear dark jackets and trousers, plain shirts and hats. The women and girls wear long dresses and small bonnets. They have long hair and they don't wear any make-up or jewellery.

Family life is very important for the Amish. They live in large families and everyone helps with the work. The day starts when the sun rises and it ends when the sun sets. The men and boys work in the fields and the women and girls work in the house. When something big is needed, such as a new barn, all the neighbors help to build it. While the men and boys cut, lift and hammer the wood, the women’ and girls` prepare the food and look after the children. Nobody works on Sundays, because everyone goes to church.

But life for the Amish is not all work. They have a lot of village parties. They don't dance or play musical instruments, but they sing hymns and they have a good time.

There is no electricity in the world of the Amish. They don't use chemicals on their farms. The rules are strict. But there is no crime and no pollution. Nobody is poor and nobody is lonely.

Model A

I'll never forget the first time I met my grandmother. She had been living in Australia, but decided to move back to England.

When she arrived I stood nervously pulling on my father's coat, half hiding behind him. It had never occurred to me that this sweet, plump, elderly lady would be so excited to meet me. She was shorter than I had imagined and had a round face, short, grey curly hair and friendly green eyes. Her rosy cheeks gave her wrinkled face a childlike appearance, and when she smiled at me I couldn't resist giving her a big hug, ignoring her perfectly-ironed dress.

It wasn't long before I realized how generous and understanding she was. She always had something for everyone and was there to listen to us without intruding into our lives.

She was determined to buy a little house of her own so she could find the peace and quiet that she needed to write her poetry. She had so many hobbies and interests that there was always something to talk about.

That meeting with my grandmother led to a close relationship which lasted until her death two years ago. She was a fantastic lady and I shall always be grateful for the comfort, advice and support she gave me whenever I needed it.

My grandmother was a very generous and understanding woman. She always had something for everyone and listened to us without intruding into our lives.

My grandmother's main interest was writing and she managed to publish several books of poetry while she was alive. As well as that, she had many other hobbies and interests and there was always something to talk about.

She has been one of my best and most trusted friends. I feel fortunate to have met her. I've known Julie since my first day at school, when we were only five. I can remember her smiling face as the teacher, Mrs Snow, asked me to share the same desk with her.

One of Julie's favourite hobbies is cycling. She also enjoys reading people's horoscopes and trying to predict what will happen in the future. Alex: Great. Are you reading anything interesting now?

Jane: I'm reading another English classic — "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens and I love it.

My House
Our house is in a quiet neighborhood in Oakridge. Every time I walk into it, I feel an immediate sense of warmth and security.

It is the most noticeable house in the street because оf its colorful garden. There is a long driveway which leads to the house, and even before you enter through the old oak front door you can hear the sound of the happy voices of the large family that lives within.

The front door opens into a spacious hall. Downstairs there's a bright kitchen with an open fireplace and a large wooden table where we all sit chatting for hours in winter evenings. The air is usually filled with the delicious smells of my mother's cooking. Next to the kitchen is the living room, which is usually untidy as this is the place where we go to relax, watch TV or listen to music. As you go upstairs you can see doors leading to five bedrooms and two bathrooms. My bedroom has an antique four-poster bed and a dressing table next to the window. This is where I wake up every morning to the delightful sound of birds singing and the refreshing smell of coffee from downstairs.

When my friends come to my house they often describe it as a dream house, but to me it's just "home sweet home".

Punctuation is very important in story writing. Read the model and punctuate it. Finally, give the paragraph plan.

trying to ignore my intense fears i returned to my book. after a few seconds though the book was knocked to the floor by an unseen hand who's there i cried i saw something standing in front of me that made my blood run cold, a shadowy white ghost pointed a pale finger at me its mouth moved come on come with me its time it said

what do you want i managed to ask shaking with fear ,the ghost took me by the hand and led me to the window just as we reached it the clock struck twelve mysteriously, I found myself back in my armchair my book beside me I looked around but only samantha my cat was in the room trying to make herself comfortable on my lap, whereas the ghost i wondered then laughed at myself, id better stop reading ghost stories i thought but then i felt a cold wind blowing in through the now open window.

Sixteen-year-old Andrew Truman was praised last night for his bravery when he saved a stranded dolphin just off the coast of Procide last Monday.

Andrew was on a sailing holiday with his family in the Mediterranean when the incident occurred. They were relaxing on their yacht when a nearby fishing boat began pulling in its nets. Looking closer, Andrew noticed that a dolphin's fins were trapped in the nets. Without hesitating, Andrew dived overboard, swam to the other I and cut through the net to release the dolphin. “Dolphins are intelligent, friendly creatures," said Andrew when asked about his experience. "Fishermen should be re careful when using their nets." The owner of the fishing boat was arrested for using illegal and fishing in a prohibited area. Many similar cases have I reported recently and the government is thinking about taking stricter measures towards the protection of dolphins.
Model B

It all began one hot afternoon while I was on a sailing holiday in the Mediterranean with my parents. Is we approached the coast of Procida, we all agreed that it was time we dropped anchor and stopped to have lunch. We were just about to start eating when Dad pointed out a fishing boat that had stopped near ours to pull in its nets. As we were watching, I suddenly noticed a fin sticking out of one of the nets. I could hardly believe my eyes: it was a dolphin. Immediately, I grabbed a knife, dived into the water and swam towards the fishing boat as fast as I could. As soon as I got there, I cut a hole in the net so that the dolphin could swim away. Exhausted, I swam back to our yacht. The coastguard, whom my father had radioed, later told us that not only was the fisherman using illegal nets, but he had also been fishing in a prohibited area.

Computers: A blessing or a curse?

Almost every home, office or school has a computer of some kind these days. Many people feel that these machines are now an essential part of our lives, but how necessary are they really?

One of the main advantages is the time that can be saved by using a computer. This is especially beneficial in the workplace, where employees can do their work far faster than they could in the past. In addition to this, computers can be educational and fun. From a very young age, children can gain basic computer skills through programmes that allow them to learn, draw, paint and play. In today's technological world, this knowledge can only help them in the future.

However, there are various negative aspects to using computers. Many jobs have been lost due to the fact that computers can do a lot of tasks more efficiently than humans. This has led to high unemployment in many countries. What is more, computers can actually cause health problems. Endless hours in front of a screen can cause eye strain and headaches, which are serious side-effects.

To sum up, it seems that computers are a useful addition to our fast-moving world of high technology. However, it must be remembered that they are here to serve us - not to replace us.
Model B

Your teacher has asked you to write a composition on the topic "Are computers a necessity?"

Computers play an important role in the lives of most of us today, whether we realize it or not. Some people, however, are beginning to ask if we really need them. In my opinion, computers have become a necessary part of modem life.

In the first place, computers can save a lot of storage space. Storing information on computer disks is one of the most efficient ways of keeping data. One computer disk can hold the same amount of information as several books.

Furthermore, computers save everyone a lot of valuable time. Stored information can be found at the touch of a button, whereas searching for it manually takes much longer. Therefore, our everyday lives are made easier - from going to the bank to doing the shopping.

Nevertheless, there are those who claim that computers are unnecessary and make our lives more complicated. They argue that in the past we managed very well using other methods and we have become too dependent on computers. However, they fail to consider that the time saved by using computers for repetitive tasks enables us to use our own time more creatively and productively.

All in all, I strongly believe that computers are a useful tool. They have changed our lives for the better and there is no reason why we should not make them work to our advantage.

Summer holidays
There are four holidays in a school year. They are autumn, winter, spring and summer holidays. It is really a very good thing to have a bit of fun between one's studies. The English are quite right when they say: 'All work and no play make Jack a dull boy." I'm sure all pupils like summer holidays best of all, because they are the longest. During these holidays we can go to the country to walk in the woods, pick berries and mushrooms or go to the seaside to swim and lie in the sun.

I'd like to tell you about my last summer holidays. First we went to the country. My elder sister and I spent two months there, June and July. There is nothing like our village. It is situated not far from the city. It took our family about an hour to get there by car. Our family has got a small country house there. Our grandparents live in the village and sometimes they come to the city. There is a large river there. We often went boating and swimming in the river. The weather was always fine, and we liked to be outdoors. Every day there was something that was fun to do. We went for long walks to the woods, picked flowers, gathered berries and mushrooms. We watered the plants in the garden, took care of the domestic animals and helped our grandmother about the house.

My sister is fond of lying in the sun. The weather was often hot, so she became sun burnt spending much time on the beach.

We had a nice time in the country. Then August came and our family went to the seaside. Several years we dreamt of spending some weeks at the seaside. We decided to go to Sochi. We got there by plane. It was fantastic! Our parents rented a room in a house not far from the sea. It took us about ten minutes to get to the beach. The weather was wonderful! We spent a lot of time at the seaside swimming in the sea, playing volleyball on the beach and lying in the hot sun. The water in the sea was always warm.

I think spending holidays at the seaside is a great rest.

We returned to the city at the end of August, because our parents had to go to work and my sister and I had to go to school. And now I am looking forward to my next summer holidays.

Willy. Well! It's the end of May already. It's time to think about summer holidays.

Dan: It's too early.

Willy: It isn't too early. We must make our plans beforehand.

Dan: Where would you like to go this year?

Willy: I think the best place to go for the holiday is Yalta.

Dan: I don't like this town. There are so many

people in cafes and on the beach there.

Willy: But the sun and the sea are so pleasant.

And where do you want to go this year?

Dan: I've got a new river boat. I'm planning to

sail down the Volga. I need a companion.

Will you join me? Willy: I must think it over.

Dan: All right.

Read and learn by heart dialogue. Then act it out.

Bob: Hi! Did you have good holidays?

Mary: No, I certainly didn't have good holidays.

Bob: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. What was wrong?

Mary: You advised me to spend my holidays in Yalta, didn't you?

Bob: Yes, you are right.

Mary: You said that I would be met at the airport and I wasn't.

Bob: But the hotel was nice, wasn't it?

Mary: No, it was not! You said it was very modern but it wasn't. You said that it had a swimming pool. It had... but it was empty.

Bob: Oh, dear. The weather was fine, wasn't it. And you could spend a lot of time on the beach.

Mary: Yes, I could. You said that the hotel was near the beach and I could walk to the sea in two minutes.

Winter holidays
Winter holidays are not so long as summer holidays, but they are very nice too. They usually begin on the 30th of December and end on the 15th of January. The most pleasant and exciting thing about winter holidays is the New Year. It is my favourite holiday. When I was a child I wrote letters to Santa Claus and told him what presents

I would like to get. My mother helped me to write those letters.

Every year we have a New Year tree and decorate it with toys, tinsel and coloured lights. We send and get many greeting cards. I like to get presents. My parents always give me nice presents. Last year they gave me an interesting book and many tasty things as a present. I always give presents to my parents, too. I usually make something with my own hands for my parents and grandparents.

We usually have a holiday supper with many tasty things. When the clock strikes twelve the grown-ups drink a toast to the New Year and we wish each other "Happy New Year." Then we dance, sing songs, watch holiday TV or go for a walk and play snowballs outside. I think it is the best holiday.

I spent my last winter holidays in the city. The weather was fine. It sometimes snowed and in January there was a lot of snow everywhere. It wasn't cold. We often went to skate on the skating-rink. Sometimes my parents took me to ski in the country. I can't ski well, but I’m fond of skiing. There is nothing like the winter forest! Everything looks so pretty covered with snow.

When it was very cold I stayed at home, read books, watched TV, played computer and table games. Sometimes my friends came to see me and we went to play snowballs and make funny snowmen in the yard.

It was a fantastic time!

British customs and traditions
Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. In Britain traditions play more important part in the life of the people than in other countries.

Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. There are some old traditions and customs. They are the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, Trooping the Colour, the State Opening of Parliament, changing of the guard and taking care of the ravens in the Tower.

The legend says: till the ravens are alive in the Tower, England will be rich. We can see a group of cavalrymen riding on black horses through the streets of London. These men are Life Guards. Life Guards wear red uniforms, shining helmets, long black boots and long white gloves. They guard the king or the queen of Great Britain and very important guests of the country.

In England many things are the other way round. For example, we seldom speak about the weather. If we do, it usually means we have no topics to discuss. In England if you don't speak about the weather the English are surprised and think that you are very dull.

You can easily offend the English only if you tell them they have no sense of humor. The English hardly ever lie, but they don't tell you the truth either.

In England even the richest man can wear some old clothes and not shave.

Some of us think life is a game, but the English think cricket is a game. In England people have good table manners. It is a tradition too.

Most English love gardens. Growing roses is one of the most popular hobbies among Englishmen. They usually prefer a house with a fireplace and a garden to a flat in a modern house with central heating.

The English like animals very much. Lots of families in Great Britain have got one or more pets. Dogs are the favourite pets and there are about 6 million of them in Britain. The second favourite are cats (about 5 million) and the third favourite is a bird — a budgie. Animals have a much better life in Britain than anywhere else.
