Dear Editor,

I am writing to you about the concert in the club «Neon» last Saturday with the American rock band, Linkin Park. There was an audience of 65 people.
The band started late and had trouble with their sound system. However, the performance was great. Linkin Park is a traditional rock band with a singer, a lead guitarist, a bass guitarist and a drummer.

Although he was a bit nervous at first, the lead singer Chester Bennington really got the audience going. The crowd sang along to a lot of the songs and went wild with Linkin Park’s funky version of Burning In The Skies.
However, I have to say that the concert was not a total success. The acoustics of the club are terrible and although the heating was on, it did not work properly. At 11.00 everyone was having a great time. However, the band had to stop because it had some problems with the sound.

Why can’t we have concerts in the night club «Zarya» instead? Although it is older and you have to pay to hire it, the acoustics are great and the heating actually works. And we wouldn’t have to finish so early!

Dear Alan,
Thanks for your recent letter. I’m so sorry I haven’t written for so long, but I’m working hard at school now. I‘m having some very important exams at the end of this month.
How are you? How did you pass your exams? And what are your plans for the holidays?
Anyway, you asked me if I could play any musical instruments. I can play the guitar. I like this instrument best of all. Firstly, the sound of it is clear. Secondly, you can easily take a guitar with you anywhere. What kind of music do I like? Of course, modern music but not rap. It is pop or dance music. I think this music appeals to our hearts. Being free I always listen to my favorite singer Beyonse. Her voice is soft, sweet and amazing. I can say she is very popular in Europe. Haven’t you heard her? She has already recorded a new album called «I am…». My favorite single is «Sweet Dreams». It makes me feel happy.
Well, I must finish now because I have to help my mum to do the washing up. Write back soon and tell me all your news.

The concert of “Splin”
Last year, in June, there was a fantastic concert of “Splin” in a club of Nizhny Novgorod. There were a lot of fans eager to see the famous group. The auditorium was not very big and there was not an empty seat. Nevertheless, by the beginning of the concert there was already a great atmosphere.

When brilliant lead singer, Alexandr Vasiljev, walked on to the stage, the crowd was really excited. The group opened the concert with “Wave” and their second song “My love” was as energetic as ever. The boys played all their best songs and finished with a new version of “The Romance”. For the encore, they played “We were sitting and smoking”, accompanied by smoke.

Although the stage design was not very spectacular and there were not many special effects, the audience really loved the concert. The sound was quite clear and the words of the songs were easy to understand. In fact, the fans knew the words of practically all the songs; and the most popular songs, such as “Say!” or “My heart”, were sung by everyone as loudly as possible.

As we left the auditorium, I was really happy. The concert lasted an hour and a half but it seemed shorter. The group have energy and enthusiasm and give their fans what they want, their songs are incredibly exciting – you can see why they have become one of the most popular Russian’s rock groups. I really love them!

The role of English in the modern society.



In the modern society English plays a very important role. Now English is an international language. It is the most influential language in the world, spoken by more than a billion people on the planet, as their first, second or third language. English currently dominates science, business, the mass media and popular culture. For example, 80% of e-mails on the Internet are in English. But why is learning the language so important?
Firstly, it’s important for your career. To get a good and prestigious job one must speak English fluently and efficiently. Large companies often co-operate with international firms, so knowledge of the language is necessary.
Secondly, travelling abroad has become very popular now. Everybody wants to visit different countries and learn foreign cultures. Speaking English you can go anywhere without being afraid that other people will not understand you. Besides you can always get Прослушать

Then, you can read papers, magazines and books, watch satellite TV Programs. Besides, the English language is the language of the great literature. William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde wrote their books in English. A lot of modern literature and many new films in English come out every year. If you don’t know the language you have to wait for translation, which unfortunately very often differs from the original.

As for me, I enjoy learning English very much, but it is hard work. It expands my horizon and knowledge. I want to speak English fluently, but I should work harder and be more serious. I must study English well in order to get an interesting and useful profession.

To sum up, I believe that knowledge of foreign languages makes a person educated and well rounded, and prepares him for a successful career. It is not only the language that counts, but also the fact that it is a way of getting to know different cultures. You can’t broaden your mind if you see the world only from the perspective of your own culture.

“Nothing is impossible”.

An article review

Well, to begin with I really think that there is nothing impossible for a real hero. I was greatly impressed by the article about Christopher Reeve written by a journalist, who interviewed him a few months before his death.

The article is devoted to a real superman in life not only on the screen. Christopher Reeve was a successful actor, famous for his Supermen films; he was also an excellent athlete, a pianist, a sailor and a horse rider.
But one day the tragedy happened. Christopher fell off his hourse and was paralysed from the neck down. The doctors thought he was not going to pull through.
The author describes that the first six months were terrible, but then Christopher started to make remarkable recovery. He could now move his toes and the fingers of his left hand.
The article gives us information about Christopher’s feelings and his strong will. He woke up at eight every morning and, after taking his vitamins, began his four-hour morning programme of exercises and treatment.
He did all his best to be more active than most able people and succeeded in different areas. He acted in a TV film, directed a movie, wrote two books, gave a lot of interviews, and made speeches about disability.
His family was very important to him. He was surrounded every day by love and support. The author told the readers how Christopher Reeve could do it. He dealt with the challenge of everyday life because he thought about what he could do instead of what he couldn’t.
In a word, the author is sure Christopher is a real superman in life. And as for me, I admire such people too.

Should wear uniforms to school?
Each year, our government decides: "Should children wear uniforms to school?" For example, now uniforms are only for students of lyceums and gymnasiums, which are introduced by the administration of the institution. However, do we need uniforms in all schools?

On the one hand, the uniform is beautiful and practical. Also, if you choose the correct form, it is stylish and fashionable. Uniforms unite pupils and make them more and disciplined. Furthermore, classical cut sets of children to school. We see that the children come to learn, not to a disco.

On the other hand, the uniform has its limitations. Despite the stylish forms, some students, such as the girls do not like it. It would be good to buy several sets of at least two per shift. Moreover, the entire set of uniforms is expensive. Uniform does not allow the child to develop his own style and show personality. Young people have always boasted of their clothes, although the uniform does not give them that opportunity. And all the other classes wear the same uniforms, too.

To sum up, we can say that all the same uniform is necessary at school, but not of the same style. I think it's better to limit the clothes. And then the children will be able to show their individuality and dress as stylish as rigorously.

A Film Review

“New Moon” is a science fiction film in two parts produced by Cris Waytua. It’s a screen version of the novel by Stefany Maier. It is set in the U.S.A. in the twenty – first century. The exciting love story is based on an unreal fact – a girl falls in love with a vampire. The epigraph of the film “it will be as though I never existed” is very exciting in order to attract viewers.

In the first episode Bella Swawn turns up in the family of the Callens and hurts herself by chance while unwrapping her present. One of the vampires, Jasper by name, after seeing blood, couldn’t help catching Bella. Edward Callen saves her despite being a vampire himself.

Christian Stewrd plays Edward like a real boyfriend, a loving and kind man who is in love with Bella too. Nevertheless he can also be very decisive. He parts with Bella because he is sure, in this case Bella will be safe. Izabelle Stown is excellent as Bella who is brave in spite of danger. Jasper plays very well, too. Among the all - star supporting cast, there are some outstanding performances although some of the scenes are very violent.

The filming is imaginative with good action scenes, for example when Jasper turns into a wolf. However, some of the scenes are cruel and the film is definitely not for children. The clothes are up-top-dates and the film is shot in some spectacular locations, such as the Alps surroundings.

To sum up, this episode shows how love story can be more exciting than any modern thriller. Don’t miss this film!

Summer jobs.
Nowadays many teenagers try to find a part time job either after school or during school holidays.
Firstly job introduces teenagers into the real world gives them confidence and teachs to take up responsibility., Secondly, having a job helps teens learn to manage their time and get necessary skills and practical experience. While working young people learn to be a part of a team and get some leadership skills. Thirdly, having a job is a healthy way of earning money. It also teaches us to value the money and things more , because you are financially responsible for them.
Some people are strongly against teens at work.

To begin with, they think that teens with after school jobs will not find time for homework. Teachers complain that such pupils do not prepare their homework well and do tests poorly.

Besides, from their point of view teens who work miss something others can experience. They do not have time to take part in extracurricular activities. To add to this some parents think that their child is too young to work and should enjoy his green years to the most.

I personally think that young people should be encouraged to work during the holidays to get some job experience. I cannot wait till I grow up and start making my own money. I do not want my parents to feel responsible for me when I become 18. I want to be independent.

Pros and cons of television
The general opinion about television is that it is terrifically exciting, very powerful and potentially very dangerous. Nowadays there is no agreement weather advantages of television overweigh its disadvantages.

One positive point of television is that it has the power to educate. You can take a TV course in different subjects or travel round the world sitting in a comfortable chair. Furthermore, it is a cheap form of education, which gives pleasure to millions of people, especially those who live alone. In addition to this, television is becoming increasingly specialized, which means its catering for a wide range of different viewers.

However, some people argue that television has had a terrible effect on family life. People no longer talk to each other and families spend hours in front of the «box» instead of going out or simply having a conversation. A further negative aspect of television is that there is too much violence on TV. Scientists say that there is a link between the viewing TV violence and children's aggressive behavior. One last thing — television turns people into «couch potatoes» and telly addicts. The fact is people in Russia watch TV for about 4 hours a day on average

To summarize, the power of television for good and evil is exaggerated. In my opinion, television is just another form of entertainment and if you have other interests or hobbies it is neither harmful nor addictive.


Do you believe that money makes people happy?
Some people think money brings happiness. Maybe they don’t know the English proverb: «Money is the root of all evil». People have always been fond of money. They have always wanted to be rich. A lot of crimes have been committed because of money. Money has made a lot of people miserable and lonely but people still believe in the power of money.

As for me I think money doesn’t bring happiness. On the one hand money gives us freedom. People often say: «Money makes the world go-round». It’s true. But we shouldn’t forget the proverb: «No money, no problem». You can’t buy real love for money; you can’t have true friends for money either.

To sum up money does not mean real love or friendship. And at last health, good devoted friends, happy family are more valuable than money, I think.

I can’t say I’m a materialistic person. Possessions, design clothes don’t give us much freedom. I think a lot of teens are becoming materialistic nowadays because it’s a world–wide trend. Besides we live in a competitive world where success is important. So people are becoming more and more materialistic.
I want design labels, but now it’s not important for me. The way you look is really important especially for teenagers who want to be a part of a group. So they need to have the right designer clothes.
I really don’t like that money and possessions have become so important in people’s life. I think money means a lot for young people who have grown up in a materialistic world. It’s really sad…
