Tapescript:

M- Man; W-Woman
Now we are ready to start.

M - I mean , do you think there are any real differences left between women's and men's attitudes these days?

W - Oh yes. Take illness, for example, It's a well -known fact that all men's illnesses are more serious than women's.

M - What on earth do you mean?

W - Well, whereas women may feel “a bit off-colour”, have “ just a cold” or “a slight headache”, for men it 's much more black or white, they basically recognize only two states or being: men are either fit enough to run the marathon

before breakfast and win, or they 're too ill to stand up.

M - Well, that's not actually true of me. I had a cold last week, but l didn't make a big thing of it, did I?

W - True enough ... Okay, let's leave you out of it for a moment. What about sports injuries? Just consider the typical performance on a football field. How often have

you seen a player rolling around in agony, with the TV commentator predicting broken bones and the end of a brilliant career - and then the very next minute he's back on his feet, running round the pitch, without even a trace of a limp?

M - But what's that got to do with your argument?

W - It 's the same . .. the same two states . .. either all or nothing. You men have a code. There's no such thing as a slightly sore leg that aches for a while. Either it's so bad that the man may never walk again, or it's absolutely fine. And it's the same with health in general, as I said in the peak of condition or else at deaths door.

M - Well, you have a point about football players, although I think you 're taking it a hit too seriously - half the time, they 're just pretending after all.

W - Which is just my point. But what is it that turns them , in less time than it takes to kick a ball, from children in need of someone to kiss them better in to fearless men?

M - Probably the threat of a goal at the other end of the pitch... I told you , it's an act.

W - No, no, no, it's much deeper than that ... I think it's all to do with how buys have been brought up. They grow up expecting to be brave ... to be stoical. I mean, let 's face it, today's New Man may be ready to express his emotions but , when it comes to admitting pain or discomfort, he's as stiff-upper-lipped as he ever was.

M - And women?

W - Women, when they are unwell and sense they're getting worse, take avoiding action - you know, using medicines, going to bed earlier, or .. .

M - Neither of which is true for you ...

W - Let me finish ... or taking time off work before they reach the stage of collapse. Men on the other hand feel that if they do any of these things it's a sign of weakness. So they end up fighting off an illness until they can hold out no longer. And then, when they collapse with a secondary infection requiring a doctor's prescription and days, if not weeks in bed, they see it as a confirmation - “Even a man like me couldn't shake this off.”

M - Oh , come on!

W - And what's more, when they are ill, men revert to playing the role of a child, with their unfortunate partner cast in the role of mother. Not that I would ever mother you, you understand!

M – No, no, no. Okay, so what do you think is behind these different attitudes of men and women?

W - Well ... for one thing, women, unlike men, do take for granted a certain amount of pain and discomfort in life.

M - Hmm ... I suppose that's true - childbirth, for example?

W - Absolutely ... and women also feel free to discuss these experiences. Illness is a tricky issue for a man, trapped in a world where he can tell no one but his partner how much he suffers and just where it hurts. It's no wonder you lot behave as you do - and who could blame you for making the most of it while it lasts?

M - Well, I still don't think you can include me in your sweeping generalizations.

W - Hmm ... Of course, there could be another reason why men's attitudes differ from women's. A man knows that when he is too ill to go on, his partner will nurse him. A woman knows she'd better not get that ill!

M - I'll remind you of this conversation when you're next bedridden…

Speaker A

I’d like to be able to speak fluent French because I’d like to live in France one day.

Speaker B

It would be nice to be able to talk to people no matter which country they are from. So I think we should all learn to speak an international language such as Esperanto.

Speaker C

In my opinion, it is important for us to try to learn few languages that are not spoken by many people. Otherwise, many languages might die.

Speaker D

When I finish my studies, I’d like to become a teacher of modern languages, so I have to improve my knowledge of English, French and German.

Speaker E

I don’t think it matters which language you learn, as long as you try to learn about and respect other people’s cultures and traditions.

Speaker F

Well, I spent several years in Spain when I was younger, as my parents lived and worked there. I grew up speaking both Spanish and English, and I think it’s been a great benefit to me. Being bilingual has a lot of advantages.

I - Interviewer J - Mrs Jamieson A - Mr Ashton
Now we are ready to start.

I - Hello and welcome once again to Head to Head. With me in the studio today are two people who have very different opinions at the Channel Tunnel. They are Mr.

Frank Ashton, who lives in London and works in Paris and who is a regular tunnel user, and er ... Mrs Vanessa Jamieson, who comes from Cheriton, which I believe is the village where the tunnel actually begins, is that right?

J - Yes, that's right.

I - ... and who has been a leading activist in the campaign against the tunnel. Mrs Jamieson, if I could start with you. The tunnel is already being used. You've lost the war. Why continue to fight?

J - The reason we haven't given up fighting is because we haven't lost the war. We started fighting when they were building the tunnel because it was disrupting our lives. We are fighting now because the tunnel is unsafe. It's unsafe -
A - Oh, that's rubbish!

J - ... lt's unsafe for the people who use it and it's unsafe for the people who live near it.

I - Hmm… Mr Ashton, doesn't Mrs Jamieson have a point? I mean you're a regular user of the tunnel. Aren't you alarmed by all these rumours of safety problems?

A – Well, let me first say that l'm very sorry that some people were inconvenienced by the construction work. It was obviously –

J - Inconvenienced!

A - It was a very difficult task to choose a route for the tunnel link because of course the whole of the south-east is so densely populated. Mrs Jamieson was one of the unlucky ones. But to say that the tunnel is unsafe simply isn't true. And what's more ...

J - Of course it's unsafe! The truth of the matter is, and I'm sure Mr Ashton knows it, is that the operators were losing money because of all the delays during construction, so they missed out all the standard safety checks and opened the tunnel anyway. That's why there are still problems!

A - Mrs Jamieson really shouldn't believe everything she reads in the newspapers. The only …

J - I find your attitude very patronizing!

A - If I could finish ...

J - It's not what I read in the newspapers!

A - If I could finish ... The only problems have been very minor ones, small technical hitches, that sort of thing.

I - But what about all the newspaper reports, er ... reports of changes in air pressure affecting people's ears , er ...reports of leaks … , there's a report here about how if there was a serious fire in one of the carriages, that ... that the firemen wouldn't actually have enough room to deal with it. Can you really dismiss these minor technical problems?

A – Well, I’m not an engineer. But let me say that as a passenger I feel perfectly safe.

J - Well, as someone who lives at the mouth of the tunnel on the English side I don't feel safe! It's a tunnel of death . There's nothing to stop a fox or a dog with rabies from getting into this country and causing an epidemic!

A - I'm sorry, but that's just silly! There's no rabies north of the River Seine in France, and even if some rabid superfox did manage to cross the Seine and travel one hundred miles to reach the tunnel, it would find a perimeter fence designed to stop burrowing animals such as foxes. It would also find poison, security cameras, security guards, electrified rails . And each tunnel - because there are three

- is about thirty miles long. So, it really would have to be a superfox, wouldn't it?

J - I'm sorry that Mr Ashton finds the idea of rabies entering this country so amusing. A fox could of course come into the country on a train.

A - Or on a ferry for that matter. But that's hardly a reason to close the tunnel!

I - I'm sorry, but that's all we have time for. I’d like to thank my guests, Frank Ashton and Vanessa Jamieson for going head to head! Next week, on Head to Head we'll be hearing from two people who just can't agree about …

1. What is passive smoking?

2. How can passive smoking be a danger to health.

3. What about people who already have respiratory diseases?

4. What are the benefits to employers of taking steps to limit passive smoking?

5. Wouldn't it be best to totally prohibit smoking at work?

6. What is the evidence?

7. Why be concerned about smoking at work?

8. What about safety hazards from smoking at work and health risks for smokers?
A. Nowadays fewer people are smokers and attitudes to smoking are changing. Smokers are a minority in many workplaces. People have become more aware of the serious health risks faced by smokers themselves. There is increasing concern over the possible health effects of breathing other people’s tobacco smoke. Work is one of a few situations where non-smokers may have to spend long periods in close contact with smokers.

B. When smokers and non-smokers share the same room, non-smokers cannot avoid inhaling some environmental tobacco smoke as they breathe. This is called ‘passive smoking’. The smoke concerned is mainly ‘sidestream’ smoke from burning cigarettes, cigars or pipe tobacco, but there is also some smoke exhaled by smokers.

C. In some situations, a complete ban is justified for safety reasons. But elsewhere го the imposition by management without proper consultation of any measures to control passive smoking could lead to resentment among smokers and problems in enforcing the no-smoking rule.

D. This leaflet does not deal with the well-recognized safety hazards from smoking where there is a risk of fire or explosion. Nor does it discuss the health hazards to 25 individuals who smoke, particularly while working with substances such as lead or asbestos. Such hazards are covered by guidance on each subject.

E. It is now beyond doubt that smoking is a major cause of disease and premature death for smokers themselves. Tobacco smoke contains various substances that can cause cancer or other health problems. Raised levels of airborne harmful substances 30 are found when smokers’ homes are compared with those of non-smokers. Still higher levels may occur in poorly ventilated indoor places of work where several people are smokers.

F. There have been many scientific studies on passive smoking. The results of this research were reviewed by the Independent Scientific Committee on Smoking and Health 35 in their Fourth Report. The Committee concluded that ‘while none of the studies can on its own be accepted as unequivocal, the findings overall are consistent with there being a small increase in the risk of lung cancer from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, in the range of 10%—30%’.

G. Limiting or preventing smoking by an agreed and carefully implemented policy may improve employee morale, reduce arguments between smokers and non-smokers, 45 reduce time lost through sickness, and diminish cleaning bills. It will reduce fire risk.

Прочитайте текст и выполните задания 12–18. В каждом задании запишите в поле ответа цифру 1, 2, 3 или 4, соответствующую выбранному Вами варианту ответа

Whenever people ask how many children I’ve got, I say three: Adam, 10, and Paul, 8, from my first marriage - and 29year-old Brian, the biggest kid of all! He’s been like that since we met, though I only picked up on it later. I’d been single for two years and when I first met him, I thought he was an idiot. I mean, he wore even weirder clothes then, and played practical jokes on people - mind you, he still does, though I don’t find it offensive myself.
As I got to know Brian better, I discovered just how juvenile he is. Generally, I don’t mind what he does, unless it affects Adam or Paul. One day he got told off in a toy shop for playing with the goods - and I’ve never forgotten how he sulked when I refused to buy him a water pistol! Everything in the house has been taken to bits by him at some time or other, including the boys’ computer, which is really unacceptable. He’s driven me mad at times playing his guitar and he won’t get his hair cut because he fancies himself as a rock star, but I know how much it means to him so I leave well alone.

He hasn’t got a steady job and although he started a computer course, he dropped out recently, so I’ve been keeping us afloat with my teaching. I used to give him £20 a week pocket money, but I’ve stopped that. It’s not the money in itself, but while he had it, he didn’t need to worry about earning for himself. It’s strange living with such a big kid - my first husband, Steve, had always taken responsibility for things, but marriage to Brian has meant the complete opposite.

My friends wonder what I’m doing with him, but our with someone who had a regular job and did his share of the housework, but he bored me to tears! That’s what’s different about Brian, the fun. If there was ever a crisis, I’m sure he would be there for me, too. I work with children who have emotional and behavioural problems, so I’m surrounded by kids all the time. Brian is just another one to look after. And although I don’t enjoy being a mother figure, I came to terms with it a long time ago.

Brian replies:

“I’ve always fooled around, but then there’s nothing wrong with having a good time, is there? I think everyone should keep the child alive in them. Don’t all men like playing with toys? Secretly, I think Helen likes looking after me, even though she would deny this.”

Counsellor Sarah Wilson comments:

Relationship imbalance like this is common. A lot of couples have one partner who’s the carer, and that’s fine if they’re happy in the role. But problems start if the carer gets fed up and decides it’s time for an adult-to-adult relationship. Sometimes they become embarrassed by their partner, or grow tired of taking all the responsibility. But once behaviour patterns are set, no one can change overnight. The only way forward is for both sides to compromise.

  1. Helen wasn’t impressed by Brian when they first met because she

Broadway’s biggest musical flop
The legendary American singer-songwriter Paul Simon has added another record to his collection, but unlike his many previous awards, this time the ‘achievement’ is for 32_____ the most expensive flop musical ever on Broadway. The Capeman’ features the true story of a cape-wearing Puerto Rican immigrant who stabbed two teenagers to death in 1959. It opened in New York just five weeks ago, but is already on the 33____of closing, with an estimated loss of $11 million, much of it Simon’s own money. One of the

Most 34____songwriters of his generation, Simon was abroad when the decision to pull the 35____on his first musical was announced to a tearful cast yesterday. He is reported by friends to be 36____ upset and says he will never do another Broadway show.

Simon and his backers had hoped that the show’s big advance sales would boost its chances of success, but many of these sales were only options, which were not 37____up after the show was panned by the critics. Yet at the outset, The Capeman’ seemed to have a winning 38____, for in addition to Simon’s pivotal role, it had words by Nobel laureate Derek Walcott and choreography by Morris. However, the show was unconvincing and didn’t hang together. Part of the reason for this may be the fact that it went through three directors. The latest, Jerry Zaks, delayed the opening night by three weeks in the hope that things would gel, but even after this, he couldn’t pull it off.
