The Simple Past and The Past Continuous



115. Put the verbs in brackets into the simple past or the past continuous tense.
1. I lit the fire at 6.00 and it (bum) brightly when Tom came in at 7.00.

2. When I arrived the lecture had already started and the professor (write) on the overhead projector.

3. I (make) a cake when the light went out. I had to finish it in the dark.

4. I didn't want to meet Paul so when he entered the room I (leave).

118. Определите, какие из выделенных форм выражают длительные действия. Назовите эти формы. Скажите, в какой части предложений (главной или придаточной) они употреблены. Переведите предложения на русский язык.
(A) 1. She was travelling when she met Savage. 2. We were taking a short cut across the square when four cars came in view. 3. The day was just breaking as we landed. 4. Lieutenant Carter was sitting at his desk as they walked in.

(B) 1. That morning when I talked to him about my plans he was listening with mild attention. 2. While he spoke I was stripping off my jacket. 3.
