At the age of sixty-five, Laura Ingalls Wilder began writing a series of novels based on her early experiences on the American frontier. Born in the state of Wisconsin in 1867, she and her family were purposeful pioneers. Looking for better farm land, they went by covered wagon to Missouri in 1869, then on to Kansas the next year, returning to Wisconsin in 1871, and travelling to Minnesota and Iowa before settling permanently in South Dakota in 1879. Because of this constant moving, Wilder's early education took place in a succession of one-room schools.

From the age of thirteen to sixteen, she attended school more regularly, although she never graduated. At the age of eighteen, she married Almanzo James Wilder. Soon after that they bought a small farm in the Ozarks, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Their only daughter, Rose, who had become a nationally known journalist, stimulated her mother to write. Serving as agent and editor, Rose contacted with harper's to publish her mother's first book "Little Houses in the Big Woods". Seven more books followed, each of them described her early life on the plains. Written from the perspective of a child, they have remained popular with young readers from many nations. Twenty years after her death in 1957, more than 20 million copies had been sold, and they had been translated into fourteen languages. In 1974, a weekly television series, "Little House on the Prairie" were produced based on the stories from the Wilder's books.

Publishing
The history of publishing is characterized by a close interplay of technical innovation and social change, each promoting the other. Publishing as it is known today depends on a series of three major inventions – writing, paper, and printing – and one crucial social development – the spread of literacy.

Before the invention of writing perhaps by the Sumerians in the 4th millennium BC, information could be spread only by word of mouth. Writing was originally regarded not as a means of spreading information but as a way to fix religious formulations or to secure codes of law and other socially important matters. Publishing could begin only after the monopoly of letters, often held by a priestly caste, had been broken, probably in connection with the development of the value of writing in commerce.

Scripts of varies kinds came to be used throughout most of the ancient world for proclamations, correspondence, transactions and records; but book production was confined largely to religious centres of learning, as it would be again later in medieval Europe. Only in Hellenistic Greece, in Rome, and in Chine where there were essentially nontheocratic societies, does there seem to have been any publishing in the modern sense – i. e., a copying industry supplying a lay readership.

The invention of printing transformed the possibilities of the written word. Printing seems to have been first invented in China in the 6th century AD in the form of block printing. The Chinese invented movable type in the 11th century AD but did not fully exploit it. Other Chinese inventions including paper (AD 105) were passed on to Europe by the Arabs but not, it, seems, printing. The reason may well lie in Arab insistence on hand copying of the Quran. The invention of printing in Europe is usually attributed to Johannes Guttenberg in Germany about 1440-50 although block printing had been carried out from about 1400. In less than 50 years it had been carried through most of Europe, largely by German printers.

London is one of the most literary-minded cities in the world. It wold be hard to think of a subject which has not got a library devoted especially to it.

Let us start with the highest library in London, the Capitular Library of St. Paul’s Cathedral. To reach it, you must be prepared for a long climb, for it is situated right up near the Whispering Gallery which encircles the base of the cathedral dome.

The origin of the library dates back to the seventh century, but all its books, with the exception of some books printed before 1500 and six manuscripts, were destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The archives, however, were preserved. The Library was refounded after the Fire and the collection was built up again by gift and purchase during the 17th and 18th centuries.

From the highest library in London to the biggest – which, of course, is that of the British Museum. The British Museum Library contains about six million books and the large circular Reading Room is in the center of the Museum building. In the Reading Room is a reference section of 30, 000 volumes on open shelves and also the catalogues for the whole library.

In 1841 the London Library in St. James Square was founded – a library of about 600, 000 volumes, mainly devoted to the humanities and fine arts.

Guildhall Library founded in 1425, maintained by the City of London Corporation, is the largest public general library in London. It has a very extensive collection, including many thousand original records, relating to every aspect of London history and topography.

Each of the London boroughs maintains a public library service. Holborn’s Central Library, for example, is housed in a fine new building which was opened in 1960 and has attracted interested visitors from all parts of the world. It has over 150, 000 books (lending and reference), as well as over 5, 000 gramophone records of musical works and language instruction. 1960 also saw the opening of Kensington’s new Central Library, the largest municipal public library building in London.

Text B. John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy (1867-1933) an English novelist and playwright won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1932. He has an important place in English realistic literature because of his objective descriptions of the society of his time. He was also deeply concerned with the social problems of his day.

Galsworthy’s best-known work is “The Forsyte Saga”. It is a trilogy consisting of “The Man of Property” (1960), “In Chancery” (1920) and “To Let” (1921). Around the main character of Soames Forsyte, Galsworthy pictured a declining upper middle-class society from the 1880’s to the years after World War I. He continued the story of the Forsyte, family in a later trilogy, “a Modern Comedy”, consisting of “The White Monkey” (1924), “The Silver Spoon” (1926) and “Swans Song” (1928).

In his records of the Forsytes, Galsworthy dealt with the conflict between idealism and love of worldly things. He also captured a sense of time’s pitiless passing and of an era’s inevitable decay.

Galsworthy’s plays brought a new sense of social responsibility to English drama. “The Silver Box” (1906) contrasts the law’s treatment of rich and poor people. His severe picture of solitary confinement in “Justice” (1910) led to prison reforms. The play ‘Loyalties” (1922) deals with social conduct and racial prejudice.

Galsworthy’s plays contain many effective scenes and simple, direct dialogue. They lack the poetic insights that are found in his novels, but they are meaningful and moving.

Galsworthy was born in Kingston Hill, Surrey. Galsworthy published his first novel in 1897.

Romeo and Juliet

Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is one of the most popular love stories.

Romeo and Juliet belong to families, the Montegues and the Capulets, separated for generations by a vicious feud. Nevertheless, Romeo is persuaded by his friends Mercutio and Benvolio to go with them in disguise to a party at the Capulet house. There he meets and falls in love with Juliet, Capulet’s only daughter, and discovers that she loves in return.

Knowing that their parents will oppose their relationship, they marry in secret. But the family feud continues to rage around them and compels their deaths.

“Romeo and Juliet” is a tragic and wonderful story of an overpowering love passion shown by the master poet in sharp contrast with the quick passions of hate. The feuds of Capulet and Montegue raise the storms in which young love is wrecked. But the death of the young lovers is the death of the old hate between the two families.

The beauty and ardour for young love are seen by Shakespeare as the irradiating glory of sunlight and starlight in a dark world. The dominating image is of light, every form and manifestation of it; the sun, the moon, fire, lighting… To Juliet, Romeo is “day in night”; to Romeo, Juliet is the sun rising from the east, and when they soar to love’s ecstasy, each alike pictures the other as stars in heaven. The sad story of a tender, passionate and reckless love and its pitiable fate finds an emotional response with the audience in all countries.
