Stamps The idea for the adhesive postage stamp was first suggested by the English schoolmaster and civil servant Rowland Hill as one of the many postal reforms in Britain in 1837. Hill’s conception, for which he was later knighted, was derived from A22_______________ labels that had been issued almost a century earlier in many parts of Europe to collect a tax on newspaper. Through Hill’s efforts, on May 1, 1840, Britain released the world’s first officially issued adhesive postage stamp, a one-penny denomination universally referred to as the Penny Black. The stamp A23_______________ a portrait of Queen Victoria, which established a postal precedent in Britain. Since that time, all regular-issue stamps have portrayed the A24_______________ monarch. A companion two-pence blue Victoria portrait stamp was placed on sale on May 8th, 1840, and both denominations became so popular that many people bought them not only for postal use, but for their design and value A25_______________ souvenirs. The hobby of stamp collecting was born, therefore, within days after the Victoria stamps were issued. The Penny Black is not a rare stamp – many millions were issued – but, as the world’s first adhesive issue, it A26_______________ highly regarded. Because these stamps proved to be so successful, by 1860 most nations had adopted the use of postage stamp. Designs A27_______________ imitated those of Britain, with portraits usually depicting heads of state, and symbols or artistic designs generally being national in character. Pictorial design was more and more used toward the end of the 19th century, and stamps created to commemorate important events began to appear. The trend has continued and today almost all countries A28_______________ large, colourful pictorials. Often they are intended for the revenue to be obtained from sale to collectors.

Now we are ready to start. Speaker 1 It was summer and I was going to spend some days with my friends in their country house. When my parents said they were going to Europe together with my sister, I didn’t say anything. But soon my sister lost her passport and it was clear that she couldn’t go. My parents asked me to join them, otherwise they would have lost a lot of money. I didn’t want to go. But finally I agreed. And I didn’t regret. I saw so many interesting places and I enjoyed being with my parents. So my sister did me a favour. Speaker 2 My brother immigrated to Australia twenty years ago. We’d always kept in touch and I’d seen his wife and kids sitting in the garden on video. I promised to visit them, and so I did after long hesitations. I went there for Christmas. Before that I’d always refused to fly but there’s no point in worrying too much when you are so young. And it was the best Christmas I’ve ever had! It was full of unforgettable impressions and breathtaking events. Speaker 3 I went to the States last year with a friend of mine. We’re used to travelling around on our own without spending too much money. So we didn’t mind taking buses everywhere. But we avoided hitchhiking because we didn’t want to risk to be mugged. We saw someone being mugged outside a bus station! Apart from that, it was a great holiday. The Grand Canyon was the most marvellous sight I’ve ever seen in my life. Speaker 4 Every Muslim who is healthy and has enough money is expected to visit Mecca once in his or her lifetime. I’d put off going for years – I just couldn’t afford to go. But then, last year, I decided to make a real effort and go. It was amazing. I had seen the crowds walking round on TV before but the place was really bustling. I really enjoyed meeting people from so many different countries. Speaker 5 We’d been waiting for this holiday on the Caribbeans for a long time saving money and buying all necessary clothes. When the day came, we went to the airport where we learnt that our flight was delayed because of the hurricane on the Caribbeans. So we spent a terrible night in the airport. Then we came to the capital city and were told that we had to spend two nights in a hotel because the plane couldn’t take off because of bad weather. It was really awful. Finally, when we got to the island, it appeared that there was no hurricane at all. So I’ll never use that agency where I’d bought that tour again. Speaker 6 I’d always wanted to go to Italy and visit Rome, the Vatican, and Florence to see all the magnificent art there – and I wasn’t disappointed! It’s worth learning to speak a bit of Italian before you go. I intended to see quite a lot but there were so many tourists willing to get everywhere! I hate standing in long queues. You must have seen the crowds being pushed through places like cattle. But, all the same, it was my dream destination and it was marvellous. I’d planned to go to Venice, too, but, unfortunately, didn’t have time for that. You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.) Now you will hear the texts again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 15 seconds.) Задания А1–А7
Now we are ready to start. Anne: Well, Chris, the Oscars are coming up. So are you going to watch the ceremony? I’m really looking forward to it. Chris: You know, Anne, I’m rather skeptical about the Oscars. I don’t really think it reflects the public opinion of these films. Anne: But it’s a chance for real critics to actually give their opinion of these films and to set out a standard for all the other filmmakers and directors to follow. I mean, we’ve got some fantastic films there with great actors and actresses. They’re really setting a standard. Chris: I’m not sure. Still, I think there are too many personal interests in the film industry. I don’t think that awarding prizes is a fair thing. They simply vote for people who have worked for them in the past, or… They all depend on each other in Hollywood and give prizes to each other. Anne: No, Chris. As far as I know, they all vote independently. I mean there’s no getting together… Chris: Well, can be, Anne, can be… Anne: If you just look back into the past, some truly great films have been recognised and won the Oscars. And they were considered to be great in the whole world. Chris: Yeah, Anne, but don’t you think they’ve become great because they’ve won several Oscars? What I mean is that a lot of these awards really give films a better reputation or status than they deserve. On the other hand, there are so many films that have been ignored. Anne: Yes, but I can’t really think of any film that hasn’t had an Oscar and deserved one. Chris: But that’s probably because you haven’t heard of it. I mean, the whole film industry of Hollywood is interested in high-budget English-speaking films. People just don’t know anything about good foreign films. You know, there are some great French films, for example, that have never been nominated although they deserve it. Anne: And what’s the point in watching them? You don’t understand them, do you? Chris: Well, I like them. And I especially like films without big stars, because you never know what happens at the end of such a film. I mean, if you get Tom Cruise in a movie, you know he’s going to be there till the very end of the film. He can’t be shot or die at the beginning of the film. And I, for one, prefer to be surprised by films, rather than to be a passive viewer. Anne: Probably, you are right here. Well, would you like to come and see a good film. They’re showing the Scorsese film, “The Departed”. I think it’s really worth seeing. Chris: Oh, yes, that sounds great. You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.) Now you’ll hear the text again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 15 seconds.) Задания А8–А14
