Part 2 Reading

  2. People find it useful

  3. Types of insurance

  4. How it works

  5. Thieves still exist

  6. Don't belittle the risk

  7. How to prevent the risk

  8. Suitcase goes missing but the holiday goes on

    1. Agencies can provide you with different types of insurance: you can get life insurance or accident insurance, car insurance or boat insurance, homeowner's insurance or travel insurance, and lots of other kinds of insurance policies. You can insure your employment, your bank account, your pets or even parts of your body. Whatever you want can be made the subject of insurance.

    2. The idea of insurance is to take some precautions if there is a risk of losing something. You pay the insurance company some money just in case this loss happens. If it does happen, the company pays you back, usually a considerably larger sum, which helps you survive through the difficult time. The risk should be small otherwise no company will agree to insure you.

C. The oldest type of insurance is probably travel insurance. Ancient merchants had to travel long distances to trade their goods. The money for the trade expedition was often borrowed to be paid back with some interest. It was a risky business — camel caravans and ships could be lost in deserts and at sea, the goods could be stolen ordestroyed. The merchants usually paid some extra money against the guarantee that if thecaravan was lost, the money lender wouldn't demand his money back.

D."Travelling has become much safer now but still..." This is what Adam Brown, the owner of the insurance agency Safe Travel says: "When we travel, we can face unexpected events. First of all, we can become ill or have an accident while travelling. The risk is rather high, especially in exotic countries. There are also tropical diseases. Snakes and mosquitoes inhabit the most beautiful islands. So, if you become ill or injured, your travel insurance will provide financial support. That is, the agency will pay for your treatment.

E. Also, your luggage can be lost while travelling and unfortunately this happens a lot. Can you imagine life in a foreign city without the most essential clothes and personal things? However, if your lost or damaged luggage has been insured, your travel insurance will financially cover the property that has been lost, orat least part of it.

With that money you can buy everything necessary and your holiday wont be ruined.

    1. And last but not least, your luggage or money can be stolen. It's not a very good idea to wait till the police find it. It may take too long. Call the agency and the company will pay for the damage done. Then let the police do their job while you are enjoying your holiday."

    2. Adam Brown has been in the insurance business for more than fifteen years and the number of his clients is growing. It's growing, he thinks, because when people are on holiday, they want relaxation not a struggle. Travel insurance helps them to feel safe and enjoy the holiday even when something goes wrong.

Контроль чтения по теме «межличностные отношения»

Match the parts of the text with the headings.

  1. Black marks in life

  2. An unusual appearance

  3. The worst problem

  4. Intolerant comments

  5. A non-demanding guest

  6. An unexpected piece of advice

  7. Useful language

  8. A good conversationalist

                    1. A. It happened when Uncle Ron, my mother's distant relative, came to our town on some business and stayed with us. It was difficult to say how old he was. He was not young, but he wasn't old either. His face was wrinkled but he was sporty, upright and energetic. There was something about him which made me think of King Arthur and his knights.

                    2. B. He was pretty busy all the time and we didn't see much of him. He had lots of business meetings somewhere in the city and usually came home quite late.

He seldom dined with us and when he did, he was usually looking through some papers at the same time so there was not much conversation anyway. We were barely aware of his presence. That's why I was surprised when I saw Uncle Ron in our sitting room early in the afternoon.

C. It definitely wasn't my best day and I didn't feel like entertaining guests. Uncle Ron seemed to sense it and didn't ask any questions. He only asked me if I hadhad lunch and suggested having it together. While eating, he casually mentioned some political and sports news but didn't touch on any personal matters. I felt grateful for the way he respected my privacy and over dessert I... told him everything about myself.

                    1. D. At that time I was facing a lot of problems. First of all, the neighbours complained to my parents that I had been rude to them, which was unfair.

I didn't mean any harm. I just can't look nice and sweet while talking to people, its a character trait and I can't do anything about it, can I? Then I quarrelled with my classmate who had accused me of being a bully. The quarrel ended up with a fight and now I was expecting my teacher to call my parents about it. And last of all — my older sister! It was an everlasting cold-war-situation, and for some reason it drove me crazy.

                    1. E. Julia was only a year and a half older than me but she never missed a chance to humiliate me. To her I was nothing more than her foolish younger brother. When her friends came, she never let me take part in their conversations saying that I was too impolite and ill-mannered to join the elect. She never allowed me to borrow her disks or books because, in her opinion, I was unable to understand that stuff anyway. It sounded offensive and discriminating to me, wouldn't it to you?

                    2. F. Uncle Ron didn't interrupt me and he didn't criticize.

"Well, I'm sure she loves you," he said at last. "But you don't listen to each other. You need to do something about it."

"She'll never listen. She never does. Just today I wanted to take her MP3 player... I wanted to borrow it... for a while... And she called me a thief and shouted at me!"

"Try again but ask for permission first," and Uncle Ron wrote a few lines on a page from his pad. "Learn this," he handed me the paper. "Learn this by heart."

                    1. G. When I entered Julia's room, she was listening to music. She took off her headphones and her look didn't promise a warm welcome.

"I wonder if I could ask you for a favour," I said softly. "Could I borrow your player for a while if you aren't using it tonight?"

Julia stared at me in astonishment, obviously making an effort to comprehend my words.

"Yes," she muttered at last. "You can take it."

It worked! I tried the magic phrase several times and it worked every time! Or almost always. Uncle Ron wrote down a few more lines for me. They really make my life easier.
