9. Read the text and answer true or false statements: The Tube The first underground railway system in the world was in London. It opened in 1863 and ran 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) from the west of London to the city in the east. The first lines were built close to the surface and used steam trains. They then built deeper tunnels and the electric underground railway opened in 1890. This system was called the Tube, still the most popular name for the London Underground. Some of the tube stations are so deep that they were used as air-raid shelters during the Second World War when hundreds of families would spend the night in the stations. One million people commute into central London every day. Sixty per cent of these people use the Tube, mainly because the London Underground system extends far from the suburbs: the Northern Line, running from north to south, covers 18 miles (28 kilometers); the Piccadilly Line, running from east to west is 47 miles (76 kilometers) long. Read the text and answer the questions: The Underground The famous London Underground (Tube, as most call it) is not only the oldest and the biggest in the world; it is one of the most modern and efficient. It comprises 11 lines covering most of London. Tubes begin running about 5.30 am and leave London on their last outward journey between 12.30 am and 1 am. Some routes start later and finish earlier, particularly on Sundays. Avoid the busiest time on the Underground between 08.00 am and 09.30 am and 05.00 to 06.30 pm. You can buy your ticket from a machine or ticket office at any Underground station. The price depends on the number of zones you travel through. You can by a single ticket for a one-way journey or a return ticket or choose one of Travel cards or London Transport (LT) cards. Many Underground stations have automatic ticket gates. Insert your ticket and take it back as you walk through. Once your journey is complete or your ticket has expired, the gate will open but the machine will retain your ticket. When you use an escalator, keep to the right of the steps so people can pass you if they are in a hurry. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the Underground. Questions: 1. Read the text and speak about American Subways: American Subways There are subway systems in 12 cities in the USA. They are known by different names. In Boston, the system is the MTA, sometimes called “the T”. Washington, DC, has a new subway they call the Metro and the San Francisco Bay Area’s System is BART- Bay Area Rapid Transit. In New York, it is the subway, but the people often say the name of the line, for example, the 8th Avenue. In Chicago, the tracks are partly underground and partly elevated, and people call the system “the el”. Trains may be local and express. Local trains stop at all stations and express – only at big stations. It is important to remember that both local and express trains operate on some lines.
