One of the first things a foreigner notices about British railways is the platform. It is higher than in most parts of the world. The platform is almost on a level with the floor of the carriages. This makes it a little easier to get in and out of the carriage with your luggage.

The trains that go to and from London are very crowded at the times when people are travelling to work since about a million people travel to London to work each day.

On many fast trains to London there is a dining car in which you can buy lunch, dinner or coffee. On others there is a buffet at which it is possible to buy snacks and drinks.

There are only two classes in Britain — first and second. A first-class ticket costs 50 per cent more than a second-class ticket. On long journeys there is a ticket inspector, who visits every passenger to see if he has the right ticket and is not travelling in the wrong class.

When the passenger reaches the end of the journey and leaves the train, he has to give his ticket to the ticket collector at the exit before he can leave the station.

1. How many people go by train to London every day?

a) Half a million people every day.

b) Only children go to London to school.

c) Only few people go to London on weekdays.

d) About a million people travel to work every day.

2. On fast trains there is ... .

a) always a buffet

b) always a dining car

c) either a dining car or a buffet

d) neither a buffet nor a dining car

3. Why is it easier to get in and out of the train in Britain?

a) The exit doors are wider.

b) The passengers have no luggage.

c) The platforms are higher.

d) There are more doors in a carriage.

4. A ticket inspector on a train ... .

a) checks if every passenger has a ticket

b) sees if every passenger has the right ticket for his carriage class

c) sells tickets to passengers

d) brings round cups of coffee to passengers
